Former Los Angeles Police Official to Speak About Prophet Daniel and Leadership

Former Los Angeles Assistant Police Chief and Pointman Institute President Robert L. Vernon will give two consecutive lectures on the topic, “Daniel: Being a Successful Leader in a Hostile Culture” on October 22 and 23 at 7 P.M. in Waynesburg University’s Alumni Hall. Chief Vernon will also preach in the University’s Roberts Chapel on October 23 at 11:00 A.M. on the topic, “Experiencing God’s Direction.”

As the Stover Visiting Constitutional Fellow, Chief Vernon’s visit is sponsored by the Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership. Vernon founded the Pointman Institute, upon retiring from the Los Angeles Police force and has led workshops for government law enforcement and other leaders in 55 countries throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, Papua New Guinea, Russia, the Czech Republic, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Canada and the Netherlands, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. State Department, the California Department of Justice, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the Pennsylvania State Police.

Focusing on the Old Testament prophet Daniel—who defied Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and survived his punishment in the lion’s den—Chief Vernon will describe Daniel’s leadership principles in the hostile culture of Babylonia and how these principles can bolster leaders today. Vernon will emphasize that Daniel was the same age as contemporary university students in his lectures. He will explain how in the Book of Daniel, God used a college-aged person to make a profound impact on the world.

According to Dr. Lawrence M. Stratton, Director of the Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership and Assistant Professor of Ethics and Constitutional Law, “We eagerly await Chief Vernon’s lectures on the imperatives and promises of moral leadership in the face of the challenges of our post-modern age.” “Robert Vernon’s insights as a leader of over 10,000 employees in the Los Angeles Police Department and as a global expert on government will inspire the entire Waynesburg University community,” Stratton continued.

Chief Vernon was an undergraduate at Biola University, received his M.B.A., from Pepperdine University, and has graduated from both the Managerial Policy Institute and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Executive Institute. His is the author of L.A. Justice: Lessons from the Firestorm, which focuses on the root causes of the civil unrest in Los Angeles in the early 1990s following the trial of Los Angeles Police Department officers charged in the Rodney King case.

The Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership is an interdisciplinary academic center which addresses geo-political issues in the context of Christian Ethics and American constitutionalism with the objective of creatively transforming the polis.
